Spring has almost sprung—and everyone is ready for the warmer weather. Springtime is correlated with rebirth or the changing of seasons. It signifies a positive change as the temperature grows warmer and the days grow longer.
The warmer weather brings about a plethora of new happenings. The most popular at this time of year? The exciting spring events!
Here are the most exciting spring events in the San Franciso Marin and Bay areas:
Marin County Farmer’s Market
When springtime shows up, that means it is time for the annual farmer’s markets to produce themselves—pun intended. The fresh organic produce adorns Marin County’s farmers’ markets for the picking. The locally-grown food is perfect for you and your family.
The top seasonal farmers’ markets in the Marin County area include:
Fairfax Community Farmers’ Market
Novato’s Farmers’ Market
Downtown San Rafael Farmers’ Market
Point Reyes Station Farmers’ Market
Farmers’ markets or not limited to just produce. They offer a variety of collectibles, artisan-crafted items, and homemade goodies for everyone.
Art Market
The coveted Art Market is returning this year! It is held at the SF’s Fort Mason Center. The unique market features both modern and contemporary art from over 80 dedicated exhibitors from around the globe.
Over 30,000 people attend the prestigious five-day Art Market, which draws crowds from all around. Sip on a cocktail or coffee and indulge in a delicious bite as you marvel at the intriguing exhibitors’ sculptures, paintings, moving-art innovations, and more. You also have the chance to purchase one for yourself!
The price is $50 for the opening day event or $25 for a one-day ticket. The fair is Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in April.
Bay to Breakers
The famous footrace, known as “Bay to Breakers”, is set to be run this May 2022. The colorful event has been around for over 100 years. The main event? The costumes!
Participating runners have the choice of wearing unique costumes adorned with color—or simply nothing at all! Participants can choose to be goofy and run the entire race backward, in-tandem with their group, or run individually dressed as a goofy panda bear. It truly is a spectacular event for participants and onlookers!
Carnaval
Carnaval is absolutely a household name and is known as a bright, colorful, and wickedly-exciting time. This Latin American tradition honors and celebrates life and everything therewithin. The unique Latin performers represent Caribbean, indigenous, and South American people.
The festival occurs on Memorial Day weekend and fills the streets with jubilant and energy. This is not the festival to miss! The larger-than-life floats, feathers, technicolor vibes, and fanfare through the streets of Mission District continue to wow the crowd year after year.
Easter Celebrations
San Francisco prides itself on its wide array of Easter celebrations. There are events for traditional celebrations, egg hunts for the kiddies, and a huge event in Golden Gate Park. Church services are also available for the celebration of Easter.
For families, the Union Street Spring Celebration and Easter Parade offer a petting zoo, photos with the Easter bunny, and delicious treats to munch on. The adult-only “Hunky Jesus” and “Foxy Mary” contests are held later in the evening.
Cherry Blossom Festival
The cherry blossom is Japan’s national flower and is widely celebrated in America. Several states hold annual cherry blossom festivals in honor of the beautiful bud. The cherry blossom represents a symbol of renewal and rebirth, the perfect setting for springtime.
Every April for two weekends, traditional Japanese foods, music, and family-friendly activities are offered to celebrate San Fran’s Japanese-American people. Held in SF’s Japantown, you’ll learn all about tea ceremonies, taiko drum sessions, and even a few karate moves!
International Beer Festival
The International Beer Festival offers more than 100 craft brews from around the country and within the local area. Made for beer lovers, this festival is a bubbly, brewed dream!
Tasty treats from top-spot restaurants are served as you can sample beers from breweries from near and far. Mixed with trivia, live music, and games, this is a festival you don’t want to miss.
Memorial Day Weekend Events
MDW is hailed as the kickoff to summer—what can beat that? This is the time to make new memories with family and friends in welcoming the hottest, most exciting time of the year. Whether it be a picnic at the park, visiting the beach, or backyard BBQ, MDW is always one for the books.
This year, Golden Gate Park, Cal Academy of Sciences, Botanical Gardens, and the San Francisco Giants offer more than just a few events. Additionally, several festivals showcase live music, tasty treats, parades, and endless fun for two weekends—all in celebration of Memorial Day weekend.
Mother’s Day Events
Mother’s Day is an extremely important day. It is the time to make Mom feel proud—and honored. Take your mom on a shopping spree at Union Square for the huge department stores, Pier 39 for collectible souvenirs, or hang out in Chinatown.
Make your last stop at Ghirardelli Square for their mouthwatering treats. Moms work hard, so give them the day of recognition they deserve by pampering both their minds—and their stomachs.
International Ocean Film Festival
For you aquatic-lovers, the IOFF is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the underwater wonders through film. The open sea is waiting for you to dive in and explore, all while staying dry and on land.
IOFF is a nonprofit organization that offers multiple films each year in hopes to raise awareness of the crucial social and environmental importance of our underwater ecosystems. You will be both inspired, in awe, and learn something as you embark on a watery adventure and explore the seas at the Fort Mason Center.
No matter your preference, there are endless events this spring in San Francisco. Whether you are looking to surround yourself with cultural tasty treats, witness the beauty of our underwater world, or dance along to the vivid floats and colors of Carnaval, San Francisco—and springtime—are here for your indulgence.
